Focus Areas: Ocean Pollution
America's waters receive 30,000 million liters of municipal sewage each day. There were 150 ocean dead zones in 2004 and over 200 in 2006. In 2008 the estimate is over 400 , the largest the size of the state of New Jersey.
In 2004 there were nearly 20,000 beach closings and health advisory days in the U.S., 21,000 in 2005, and over 25,000 in 2006 mainly due to pollution. In 2007 beach closings were the 2nd highest ever, and sewage related pollution closings tripled.
The video below "Emptied Oceans" is one story that illustrates the growing problem of pollution in the oceans.
